Writer, Content & Editorial
at Slack in Vancouver
Slack is looking for an experienced writer to develop original, deeply-reported stories with a strong human focus on work and work life. Does this topic inspire at least 10,000 pitches and make you want to start sourcing subjects yesterday? Are you curious about people, not just “Important” people, but all people? Are you lovely to work with? Great. Come work at Slack! We’re nice too.
Write short- and longer-form stories for the Slack blog and other brand editorial outlets.
Source story subjects and ideas for yourself and other writers on the team.
When it comes to pitching ideas, you have the ability to be both editorially ambitious and scrappily opportunistic. For example, even if a story would take The New York Times a year to do, you pitch it anyway — alongside another story that you could report on and write in three days.
Have a self-driven process for reporting and researching stories and completing them in a timely manner.
Speaking of time, manage yours well. (Deadlines are your best friend.)
Give and receive feedback, respectfully. Prioritize the team’s output up there with your own.
Learn, maintain, and develop the voice of Slack in collaboration with the Editorial team.
Participate in developing a distinct editorial identity for Slack. We’re a young, fast-moving company and learning as we go. This strikes you as an opportunity, not a red flag.
Be a sharp copy editor for your own writing, as well as for others if need be.
Find just the right word. And the right emoji.
Perspicuity in all things.
A portfolio of your work. Send links to the 3 examples you’re most proud of.
Minimum 5 years of previous journalism experience or professional blogging for consumer or business publications.
Understanding of Slack, its voice, and its users.
BA degree (or equivalent experience) required; MA or MFA is also fine.
Ability to work independently, communicating across multiple time zones.
Cross-platform storytelling (across online, social media, print, radio)
Basic knowledge of HTML or a CMS like Wordpress, Medium, etc.
