Chief Technology Officer

Leads and manages a cross-functional product engineering team, providing high-level guidance and technical direction. As a resource for the engineering team, a CTO is able to easily understand client needs and clearly communicate them with the team. Has thorough knowledge of building digital products from start to finish. Externally, a CTO serves as a face for our engineering team, and acts as a key point of contact with clients. They also probably like puppies and ice-cream.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Leads technical direction for their projects, and is responsible for keeping all of their projects up to a high standard of quality.
Assist in scoping out the timeline and requirements of technical engagements with project management team.
Collaborates with CEO to pitch projects and engagements to clients.
Coaching and mentoring of a cross-functional group of engineers—no yeller’s please.
Involved in building process for vetting, hiring, and training new members of the engineering team.
Managing an engineering team, giving constructive feedback, and leading the evaluations of their team on an ongoing basis.
Foster an open, collaborative, and inclusive environment.
Located in/willing to relocate to either Victoria or Vancouver, with the expectation that they will spend time in the non-local city on a regular basis (I.E based in Victoria will spend some time in Vancouver, and vice-versa).
Interacts with their team in-person and online on a daily basis, and with clients when needed.
Will travel to client meetings, sometimes alone—we will equip with adequate stuffed animals to keep you company.
Can work remotely in either city, but face time is expected with each of the developers on your team.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Expert-level experience in web development, service architecture and strong working knowledge of mobile platforms.
You have an expert-level understanding of software development patterns and have opinions on industry best practices.
Solid understanding of digital product building process—from start to finish.
You’ve built and shipped products before.
You enjoy taking complex problems and transforming them into elegant and simple solutions. You know what is and isn’t feasible given the requirements and are comfortable giving rationale behind those decisions.
You’re up to date with the modern web framework landscape, modern service deployments, and have informed opinions on why and when to use certain technologies over others.
You love to help people get better—you’re always willing to answer questions and take the time to help people get unstuck.
You enjoy being part of a high quality development team and have a desire to give back to the developer community.
You’ve led cross-functional engineering teams of 20 or more.
You don’t let your ego get in the way of helping the team accomplish their goals.
You’re able to lead presentations and be an active participant in client interactions—you have the ability to be a technical representative for MetaLab.You want to build incredible products for incredible clients with incredible people.
